Google email accounts manager will take on a new job with a US company in a move that could help the company move beyond a focus on email.
Andrew Ford, the company’s account manager, will be joining a company called Digital Solutions, which is developing a new version of its email service, Gmail.
Ford, who is also responsible for the email app for Apple, has been at Google for nearly a year and has worked on several major features including the Gmail account manager.
He joined the company in June, just a month after it acquired email app Inbox, which it said was “built on the back of our experience building Gmail.”
It is unclear what Google will do with the new account manager or whether he will be tasked with handling the company still using the old account manager software, but the move is likely to be welcomed by users, who have long complained about Google’s email handling.
Gmail has been plagued by problems in recent years, and the company has been working on a solution to deal with the issues for some time.
Google announced last year that it would be retiring the old version of Gmail.
However, the move to take Ford on has been widely expected.
The company has struggled in recent quarters, losing nearly $4 billion in revenue last year and now appears to be looking for a way to shore up its financial position.
